Mariachi Sinfónico is a byproduct of the UNIDOS Project – a collaborative initiative that brings together two prominent musical entities: the Dr. Shirley Linzy Young Artists Orchestra of Las Vegas and the Mariachi Internacional from the Las Vegas Academy of the Performing Arts. Created by Music Director Yunior Lopez, the project aims to celebrate and showcase the rich cultural heritage of Mexican music by blending the classical orchestral tradition with the vibrant and traditional sounds of mariachi resulting in an innovative album of traditional symphonic mariachi music.
Mariachi Sinfónico features unique symphonic arrangements by Grammy-winning arranger and producer Alberto (Beto) Jiménez Maeda, Grammy and Juno award-winning producer Roberto Occhipinti, and up-and-coming composer Arturo Hernández Gómez. Lead vocals are provided by Cuban-American singer Noybel Gorgoy and Mexican-American singer Ariel Perez. Other featured vocalists include members of Mariachi Internacional: Melanie Torres, Christian Torres, Gael Nolasco, Emily Heras, Natalie Heras, and Julissa Gebhardt.
The impact of this project is multifaceted. Firstly, it serves as a platform for cultural exchange and collaboration between musicians from different genres, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of both classical and mariachi music. Secondly, the project provides a unique and enriching experience for the musicians involved, allowing them to expand their repertoire and skills by exploring the fusion of these distinct musical styles. In addition, Mariachi Sinfonico contributes to the ever evolving cultural diversity of music by introducing audiences to a harmonious blend of musical traditions. This collaboration not only showcases the talent and versatility of the participating musicians but also promotes cultural inclusivity and unity through the universal language of music. Overall, Mariachi Sinfonico leaves a lasting impact by promoting cross-cultural understanding, fostering artistic growth, and enriching the cultural tapestry of 21st century Mexican music.
This project would not be possible without the incredible support and vision from our collaborators: Yunior Lopez (creator, executive producer, and conductor), David Rivera (mariachi director), Roberto Occhipinti (producer), Jeff Wolpert (mixing engineer), Gil Kaupp (mastering engineer), Sam Friend (recording engineer), and arrangers Alberto (Beto) Jiménez Maeda, Arturo Hernández Gómez, and Roberto Occhipinti.
Mariachi Sinfónico and the UNIDOS Project was funded by the Community Learning Project – Nevada Future of Learning, Teach America, and the Dr. Shirley Linzy Young Artists Orchestra of Las Vegas.
