“The first time I heard Gary was in 1971. It was a solo recording of a standard ballad. I don’t remember the tune but my first impression was that this guy really sounds like Bill Evans. His chord voicing’s, sense of harmonic structure and improvisations were beautiful. Much like Bill, Gary knew how to perfectly support the melody line. After meeting Gary some years later (‘74), he told me (much to my surprise) that he hadn’t really ever listened to Bill at all. Gary possessed a completely natural sense of harmonic structure and when he played, it was obvious that he wasn’t distracted by celebrity but always searching for something beautiful and divine. A very special pianist with unfortunately not enough international recognition.
